WHAT IS THE TREATMENT OF EPI
Once the diagnosis has been confirmed, TLI <2.5 mcg / L (cTLI; reference range 5.7 – 45.2 mcg / L), The dog will need enzymes for the assimilation of these nutrients. The only type of enzymes sold in the clinics for the treatment of IPE dogs is Pank-Aid of Vitoquinol sold in 114 g jars. For other types of enzyme such as Can-addase or Prozyme sold in veterinary clinics, the levels of amylases, proteases and lipases do not have the concentrations required for the treatment of a medium or large breed EPI dog.
The dog must be on a diet low in fat (less than 18%) and low in fiber (less than 4%). For the start of treatment, the Gastro Intestinal LOW FAT (Min Fat 4.5% Max 8.5%) (Fibers 3.6%) is an optimal choice unlike Gastro Intestinal High Energy (Fat Min 18% Max +/- 26%) ( Fibers 3.2%)
Make sure to prescribe Metronidazole morning and evening for a minimum period of 15 days. See dosage according to the weight of the animal.
Most dogs newly diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (approximately 80%) will be deficient in Cobalamin (B12). We strongly recommend parenteral supplementation. There is also Cobalamin in capsules containing Intrinsic which is also very effective sold only in the United States. Cobalamin is normally administered over a period of 3 to 6 months. Afterwards, the dog should be able to assimilate cobalamin by itself into its food.
It is also advisable for a period of 10 to 15 days, to add FortiFlora to his food. As the dog has had prolonged diarrhea, the
FortiFlora should help it rebuild its intestinal flora.
HOW TO ADMINISTER THE ENZYMES
The enzymes must be sprinkled on the dog’s food, it is imperative to add 5 to 10 ml of lukewarm water to the food, mix everything well so that the enzymes are well moistened and wait 20 minutes to serve the bowl to the dog. This waiting period is used for the partial pre-digestion of his meal. The water activates the enzymes and the waiting time is used to pre-digest the kibble.
In the event that the dog’s owner does not add water to the food after adding the enzymes, the dog will have severe burns visible on the lips and mouth. it is therefore imperative to notify the customer of the importance of adding water to food after adding the enzymes.
It is also important to notify the client that he must be very strict in the dog’s diet. Treats, bones or other foods given to the dog outside of these meals will simply not digest. So what will have the effects of destabilizing the digestive system of the dog.
A blow that the dog will have regained all its weight and that these stools have remain well formed and solid more than 3 Months, They will be able to give as a treat, liver dried in small quantities occasionally.
